100 Voices for Change: Youth-Led Climate Innovation

In partnership with:

We asked 100 SuperSquad Sherpees this question:

How might we inspire the insurance industry with fresh viewpoints and ideas to tackle the climate crisis?

Introducing the Climate Crisis SuperSquad:

But…what is a SuperSquad?

A practical, paid work experience programme where teens engage with real business and societal challenges.

Over six weeks, Startup Sherpas partnered with Howden to run a Climate SuperSquad, with 100 diverse teenagers from across the UK.

Their challenge? To explore how businesses like Howden can understand and respond to climate risk, with a focus on practical ideas, honest insight, and measurable value.

The students tackled the complexities of climate risk, connecting insurance, business resilience, and environmental change. From sustainable policies to AI and Climate Change and Crisis Response, their ideas reflected both urgency and possibility, pushing beyond awareness into action.

Before this programme, only 43% of the SuperSquad said they would consider insurance as a career option. Afterwards, through exposure and awareness, this increased to 66%.

The result:

The Howden Ventures SuperSquad showed that young people not only understand risk—they're ready to reimagine how businesses respond to it.

Their ideas combined ambition with practicality, including:

School Solar Bonds – A funding model where communities invest in school solar panels, sharing the environmental and financial return.

The R3 App (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) – A digital tool to track personal impact, gamify green behaviours, and reward sustainable habits.

Climate Starter Packs – A low-cost solution to help families reduce their carbon footprint with accessible tools and education.

Eco-Mapping Platform – An interactive tool for businesses to map environmental risk in local communities and plan response strategies.

Plus Energy Efficiency with an Exercise Energy Generator

The focus on energy-saving initiatives and environmental conservation presented a dual benefit for the insurance industry and the planet. By encouraging policyholders to adopt energy-efficient practices and participate in conservation activities, insurers can reduce claims related to energy waste and environmental damage. This theme emphasises the role of insurers in promoting sustainable living, from using renewable energy sources to advocating for reduced carbon footprints. This proactive stance not only aligns with global sustainability goals but also opens up new avenues for innovative insurance products that reward eco-friendly behaviors.
