Innovating the gas network, a teenage perspective

In partnership with:

We asked 30 young people this question:

How can we use gas network assets to capture waste heat and make it useful?

Introducing the SGN SuperSquad

But…what is a SuperSquad?

A practical, paid work experience programme where teens engage with real business and societal challenges.

This challenge was sponsored by SGN and described as a “Call for Ideas”, a free rein for the young people to put their slant on a challenge that the business had been grappling with.

With the move away from natural gas, the UK will have a set of assets available to be put to a different purpose. What should that be?

This was possibly the most technical Squad we have run to date. Baseline knowledge of the gas infrastructure in the UK is pretty limited. Is this therefore too tricky a topic for teenagers?!

Of course not!! Over the 6 weeks, the Squad came up with 300+ ideas, ranging from community energy grids to IT hardware heat exchangers and portable waste heat storage units.

Highlighted idea from the SuperSquad

A standout idea by Ishana Rowther proposes using the gas network in times of crisis or climate emergency. If a hurricane, flooding, famine or war hit a certain area, the underground network of pipes becomes a lifeline for people, both heat and supplies.

The result:

Young people were keen to use heat transfer to solve societal issues

In terms of ideas generated, the Squad focused on how waste heat could solve other societal problems

  • Heating of homeless shelters
  • Heating bus stops to encourage people to take public transport rather than jumping in their cars
  • Heating park benches to ensure people still came out in the fresh air in winter (link to mental health)
100% completion rate for the first time ever!

The Gas Network may not sound like a topic that young people would be that interested in but this was our most engaged Squad to date. For the first time, we actually had a 100% completion rate!

Their enthusiasm can be seen in that by the end of the Squad:

– 54.5% were confident in explaining the gas infrastructure and

– 18.2% saw SGN as a potential future employer with

– 84.8% of the Squad said they would make a change to their personal energy usage as a result of the Squad
