About the Role:
Are you curious about how things work and love solving problems? As an Engineering Apprentice Extraordinaire, you’ll dive into a four-year journey of hands-on learning, technical mastery, and professional growth. You’ll work with Northern Rail’s incredible maintenance teams to keep our trains running smoothly and safely—helping connect millions of people across the North every single day.

This isn’t just a job—it’s your chance to kickstart an epic career in engineering, earn while you learn, and make a real difference to the future of rail travel. From day one, you’ll have expert mentors guiding you and access to top-notch training at Myerscough College in Preston and NTAR (National Training Academy for Rail).

What You’ll Be Doing:
Your four years with us will be packed with learning, growth, and getting stuck into real engineering challenges:

  • Year 1-2: Split your time between studying at Myerscough College (complete with awesome facilities and a chance to meet fellow apprentices) and working on real-world tasks at your local TrainCare Centre.
  • Year 3: Dive deep into hands-on projects with your team, building your skills and creating a killer portfolio for your End Point Assessment.
  • Year 4: Level up your knowledge with advanced modules on fault diagnosis, electrics, and electronics while expanding your expertise in train maintenance.
  • By the end of the programme, you’ll have a Level 3 qualification in Rail Engineering Technician – Traction and Rolling Stock and the skills to take your career anywhere within Northern.

Why This Role Matters:
Our trains connect people to jobs, friends, family, and adventures—but none of that happens without the incredible engineers behind the scenes. As an apprentice, you’ll help ensure our trains are safe, reliable, and ready to roll. Your work will directly impact millions of passengers, all while gaining the skills to build a lifelong career.

Who You Are:
You’re the kind of person who loves asking “How does this work?” and doesn’t stop until you’ve figured it out. Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • A passion for engineering: Whether it’s mechanical or electrical, you’re fascinated by how things come together.
  • Team player vibes: You’re great at working with others and know the power of collaboration.
  • Inquisitive mindset: You love solving puzzles and figuring out how to fix things.
  • Committed learner: You’re ready to dedicate yourself to a four-year programme and embrace the challenges.
  • Organised and safe: You can follow rules, pay attention to details, and always put safety first.

Must-haves:

  • At least 5 GCSEs (grades A–C/9–5), including Maths, English, and Science.
  • Live within a 60-minute drive of your TrainCare Centre.
  • Be at least 15 years old to apply and 16 by September 2024.
  • Pass a safety-critical medical assessment, including vision, hearing, and drug testing.
